Grapes: 100% Nebbiolo.
Age of vineyard: 40 years
The grapes from every single vineyard are subjected separately to the process of fermentation, maceration and refinement in wood for twelve months. After this, the products of the 14 vineyards are blended and allowed to age for a further 12 months in wooden barrels.
Nebbiolo vines are particularly sensitive to the tiny variations in different soils. The combination ofgrapes from 14 vineyards provides hints of different terroirs, thereby enriching the wine with complexity and balance. The fragrance is reminiscent of soft red berries and flowers, with delicatespices and mineral notes.
The structure is dense, although elegance prevails, while the long finish features fine tannins.
Every GAJA Barbaresco is a faithful expression of the vintage and is well suited to a long period of ageing in the bottle
Four generations have succeeded each other in the production of wine since Giovanni Gaja founded his winery in the Barbaresco district. Giovanni's son Angelo represented the second generation. He was ambitious and possessed acute powers of observation. He married Clotilde Rey in 1905. It was she who guided his entrepreneurial decisions towards total dedication to quality, without compromise. Giovanni Gaja, son of Clotilde and Angelo who died in 2002, made Barbaresco his flagship wine, thereby acquiring a leading position in the Italian market.
The enterprise is currently managed by Angelo, great-grandson of the first Giovanni Gaja, who joined the company in 1961. Since then, Angelo has continued in the wake of his father and grandfather. He has endeavoured to enhance the awareness and enjoyment of Barbaresco by acting as proprietor-producer, i.e. by making wine from the produce of his own vineyards without purchasing grapes/wine from the market. The Gaja Winery currently owns 250 acres of vineyards situated in the Barbaresco and Barolo area.
